Luino on Lake Maggiore

Main city on the shore of Lake Maggiore, which embellishes it with its almost Mediterranean atmosphere, it is a magnet for many foreign tourists who, after visiting it, take with them the memory as it also happened with Hemingway who wanted to remember her in a verse of A Farewell to Arms*. The Old Harbour the church of the Madonna del Carmine built in the fifteenth century, Palazzo Serbelloni and Palazzo Verbania both dating back to the eighteenth century are just some of the architectural beauties that will keep you company along the promenade by the lake, an essential moment for every visitor.

The traditional artisan workshops and Renaissance and Baroque buildings are another unmissable stop for those who want to enjoy the ancient atmosphere of the old Lombard era, still present in the old historic core. Every Wednesday, especially in the summer, a must-visit is the picturesque local market dating back to the sixteenth century, still maintaining its charm today.

“I saw a wedge-shaped gap in the mountains on the other side and thought it must be Luino.”

The islands

The lake offers its visitors eleven islands to admire, eight of which are in Piedmont and one in Lombardy. The most striking are in the Borromean Gulf between Stresa, Verbania and Baveno, where we find the archipelago of the Borromean Islands, consisting of the jewels of Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori. Ancient fortifications, remains of the Rocca Vitaliana, can be seen on two of the three rocks known as the Castles of Cannero, now home to several species of waterfowl.
